This advanced course is ideal for professionals working in the sake industry as well as serious sake enthusiasts.
Objectives and program
Unit 1: The theory of sake - Understand the principal factors involved in the production of sake and how they influence style and quality. - Understand the key characteristics, labelling terms and factors influencing the style and quality of the principal and speciality categories of sake. - Know the role of the principal sake trade organisations in Japan and the commercial importance of sake in the Japanese and export markets. - Demonstrate the ability to provide information and advice about sake. Unit 2: The analytical tasting of sake - Describe the key characteristics of the principal grades of sake and selected speciality sakes, and use the description to assess the quality and identify production techniques using the Systematic Approch to Tasting®
The structure of the course
The WSET 3 in sake training includes 30 hours of classroom lessons, taught by certified trainers, and 60 hours of personal work. The course takes place over two weeks. It consists of a first 3-day session, followed by a break dedicated to practice and preparation for your WSET test. The second 3-day session ends with your WSET exam. Your WSET teaching materials will be given to you when you register, to allow you to prepare for your session. You will find the essential points covered during the training, as well as tasting grids and self-assessment exercises. We recommend a minimum of 60 hours of personal work in preparation for your training.
Assessments and certificates
At the end of your session, you will be assessed on the knowledge acquired during a closed book test. To pass unit 1, you will have to answer 50 multiple choice questions, as well as four short written questions in 2 hours. To pass unit 2, you will be subject to a blind tasting test of two wines, during which you will be asked to describe a wine precisely and to analyse its quality. To get your WSET 3 certificate, you will have to answer 55% of the questions properly for each of the units. The success rate for the exam by Weeno in 2025 is 100% in tasting and 85% in theory. In the event that you fail the exam, it is possible to take it again. The cost of registration for a resit is 170 euros for the theory test and 170 euros for the practical test, 340 euros in total if you have to re-sit both tests.
Access and prerequisites
Having obtained the WSET 2 Award in Sake or being able to prove an equivalent level of knowledge is strongly suggested in order to succeed in this training. You must be 18 years old to register. Excellent comprehension and writing in the selected language are also encouraged to follow the training. Our trainings are accessible to disabled persons.
